One of the top trading platforms in Ireland is eToro, a publicly traded social investing platform with more than 40 million registered users. The company listed on NASDAQ in May 2025 (ticker: ETOR). eToro is best known for its social trading feature, which lets you copy the trades of other investors. You can choose who to follow from thousands of verified Popular Investors based on past returns, risk score, asset allocation and other criteria.

The platform gives access to more than 6,000 stocks (real shares, not CFDs, when you buy without leverage), ETFs, cryptocurrencies, commodities and indices. You can also invest in Smart Portfolios, ready-made thematic portfolios built around themes such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy or dividend stocks. New users can also get a free asset when they meet the deposit conditions.

On eToro, ETFs have no commission and stocks cost $1 or $2 per trade, depending on the exchange (other fees apply). Irish residents can hold a EUR account, so euro deposits and EUR-denominated assets avoid currency conversion. eToro also pays interest on cash balances, with a rate that depends on your eToro Club tier. Account opening is quick, and you can practise with a $100,000 virtual demo account before using real money.

On the downside, spreads can be relatively high on some products (particularly forex and crypto), and a $5 fee applies to withdrawals from the USD account. There is no inactivity fee. Irish clients are served by eToro (Europe) Ltd, authorised and regulated by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) and passported across the European Economic Area (EEA). Client funds are covered up to €20,000 by the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund (ICF). Within the wider group, eToro is also regulated by the FCA (UK), ASIC (Australia) and the FSRA (Abu Dhabi).

Another exceptional trading platform in Ireland is Interactive Brokers. Founded in 1978 and listed on NASDAQ (ticker: IBKR), it joined the S&P 500 in August 2025. The broker has come through several financial crises thanks to strict risk management, and at the end of September 2026 it had 5.58 million client accounts with access to 170 markets in 40 countries.

Interactive Brokers offers a very wide range of products (stocks, options, mutual funds, ETFs, futures, bonds, forex and crypto), order routing through IB SmartRouting, and comprehensive technical and fundamental research tools. Irish residents are served by Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited, authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI), which means they are covered by the Irish investor compensation scheme.

Beginners and intermediate investors can learn through IBKR Campus, although the platform has a steep learning curve. Customer service gives clear and detailed answers.

On the downside, the fee structure is more complex than on simpler apps, registration is more thorough (though fully online), and trading is not commission-free. However, with currency conversion at 0.002% (minimum $2), tight spreads, the Stock Yield Enhancement Program (SYEP) and tiered interest on cash balances above the first 10,000 in USD or equivalent, Interactive Brokers’ clients often achieve significant savings compared to most brokers, especially active traders and larger portfolios.

Interactive Brokers offers several mobile and desktop platforms:

  • IBKR GlobalTrader: a simple mobile app for beginners, redesigned in December 2025, with fractional shares and automatic currency conversion.
  • IBKR Mobile: the full-featured app with advanced order types, real-time data, options chains and multi-currency portfolio views.
  • Trader Workstation (TWS): the professional desktop platform with advanced analytics, algorithmic order types and customisable workspaces.

  • Website is difficult to navigate
  • Interactive Advisors (Robo-advisor feature) is only available for US customers

81% of retail CFD accounts lose money.

Founded in 2008, Plus500 is an online broker that specialises in CFDs (contracts for difference) on forex, indices, shares, commodities, options, ETFs and cryptocurrencies. With CFDs you speculate on price movements with leverage and never own the underlying asset. Plus500 is available in 65 countries and is listed on the London Stock Exchange (ticker: PLUS) as a FTSE 250 constituent.

The proprietary WebTrader platform is stable and easy to use on desktop and mobile, and you can test every feature with a free, unlimited demo account. Customer support is available 24/7 through in-platform chat.

Plus500 does not charge commissions: its main costs are the spread and overnight funding on positions held open. You should also consider a currency conversion fee of up to 0.7% and an inactivity fee of up to $10 a month after three months without logging in. Negative balance protection applies to retail clients, so you cannot lose more than your account balance.

Plus500 holds 17 licences, including the FCA (UK), CySEC (Cyprus), ASIC (Australia) and MAS (Singapore). Irish clients are served by Plus500CY Ltd (CySEC licence 250/14), passported across the EEA, with client funds covered up to €20,000 by the Cyprus Investor Compensation Fund (ICF).

Investing involves risk of loss.

Founded in 2013, DEGIRO is a low-cost European broker that became very popular thanks to its pricing. With more than 2.6 million customers in 15 European countries (including Ireland), it follows a “do-it-yourself” approach that gives investors what they need to manage their own portfolios. DEGIRO offers stocks, ETFs, bonds, options, futures, warrants, investment funds and leveraged products (similar to, but not the same as, CFDs: more details here). New Irish users can claim a DEGIRO welcome bonus through our referral link.

Key cost considerations:

  • Core Selection ETFs: more than 1,000 ETFs with no commission, only a €1 handling fee per order.
  • Euronext Dublin: €2 commission plus the €1 handling fee.
  • US stocks: €1 commission plus the €1 handling fee.
  • Other main European exchanges: €3.90 plus the €1 handling fee on exchanges such as Xetra and Euronext Amsterdam.
  • Connectivity fee: up to €2.50 a year for each foreign exchange you trade on.
  • Currency conversion: 0.25% with AutoFX on trades in other currencies.

The web and mobile platforms are deliberately minimalist, with a short learning curve. On the downside, the lack of in-depth fundamental research, of price alerts and of advanced charting may frustrate more experienced traders.

DEGIRO dashboard

In terms of safety, DEGIRO is a brand of flatexDEGIRO Bank SE, a German bank supervised by BaFin and the Deutsche Bundesbank, and Irish clients are served from the EU under the same licence. Your securities are held separately from the bank’s own assets. If they could not be returned, the German investor compensation scheme (EdW) covers 90% of the loss up to €20,000.

Cash held with flatexDEGIRO Bank SE is additionally protected up to €100,000 under the German deposit guarantee scheme.

Prices can vary by country of residence, so check the trade ticket for the exact cost before placing an order.

Lightyear is a European investment platform founded by former Wise employees and headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia. It operates through two regulated entities: Lightyear Europe AS, authorised by the Estonian Financial Supervision and Resolution Authority (EFSA, licence 4.1-1/31), and Lightyear UK Ltd, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Irish clients are served by Lightyear Europe AS, with client assets covered up to €20,000 by the Estonian Investor Protection Sectoral Fund. US securities are additionally covered by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) up to $500,000.

Earning on cash: to earn a return on your euros, you can use Lightyear Savings, which invests in money market funds. For Irish clients, EUR Savings invests in the BlackRock ICS Euro Liquidity Fund, with a yield that is variable, shown net of Lightyear’s 0.10% annual fee and follows ECB rates. Savings is an investment product, not a deposit: your capital is at risk and money market funds are not covered by a deposit guarantee scheme.

Lightyear’s fee structure is simple:

  • ETFs: no Lightyear execution fees (fund manager fees apply).
  • Stocks: €1 per trade on EU stocks, £1 on UK stocks and 0.1% on US stocks (minimum $0.10, maximum $1).
  • Currency conversion: 0.35%, which you can reduce by holding EUR, GBP and USD in the multi-currency account.
  • Savings: 0.10% annual Lightyear fee on money market funds, plus fund manager fees (the quoted yield is net of these).
  • Crypto: available to Irish clients, with a 0.45% fee per transaction.
  • No inactivity or custody fees.

The app suits beginners and intermediate investors who want to build long-term, diversified portfolios with fractional shares. It offers more than 6,000 stocks and ETFs from the US, UK and European markets, including UCITS ETFs from providers such as iShares, Vanguard, Invesco, Amundi and Xtrackers.

Lightyear also offers a free share worth up to €100 with the promo code INVESTINGINTHEWEB.

How to buy shares in Ireland

Buying shares in Ireland through an online broker involves several practical steps. Keep in mind that the specifics may vary depending on the broker you choose, so always refer to the broker’s platform and customer support for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

  1. Choose an Irish-accessible stock broker: look for online brokers that serve Irish residents and provide access to the markets you want to invest in. Popular options include DEGIRO, eToro, Interactive Brokers, Trading 212, and Lightyear. Consider the broker’s regulator (for example the Central Bank of Ireland, CySEC or BaFin), fees, FX conversion costs, product range and investor protection scheme.
  2. Open an account: visit the broker’s website and complete the online registration. You’ll typically need to provide personal information, proof of identity (passport or driver’s licence), proof of address, and your PPS number (Personal Public Service Number) for Irish tax reporting purposes. Most brokers can verify identity and open the account within minutes.
  3. Deposit funds: once your account is set up, transfer funds via SEPA bank transfer (usually free, 1-2 business days), debit/credit card (instant, sometimes with a small fee), or e-wallets (Apple Pay/Google Pay) where supported. Most Irish investors prefer SEPA for larger deposits to avoid card fees.
  4. Research the stocks you want to buy: before purchasing shares, research the company’s fundamentals (earnings, revenue, debt, growth prospects), competitive position, and industry outlook. Many brokers provide in-platform research tools, analyst ratings, and financial statements. For diversification, consider broad ETFs alongside individual stocks.
  5. Place an order: log in to your broker’s trading platform and navigate to the share you want to buy. Enter the number of shares (or euro amount, if fractional shares are supported), select the order type (market order for immediate execution at current price, or limit order to specify your maximum price), and review.
  6. Review and confirm: before submitting the order, double-check the share quantity, order type, ticker symbol (to avoid confusing similar names), and any associated fees. Once confirmed, the order will be executed by the broker according to its terms.
  7. Monitor your investments: keep an eye on your portfolio over time. Most brokers offer dashboards with daily/weekly/monthly performance tracking, dividend tracking, and tax-relevant reports. Consider rebalancing periodically to maintain your target allocation.
  8. Declare your taxes: brokers do not deduct Irish tax for you. Gains on individual shares pay Capital Gains Tax (CGT) at 33% above an annual exemption of €1,270, while gains on EU-domiciled ETFs pay exit tax at 38%. Dividends are taxed at your marginal income tax rate. Irish dividends have 25% dividend withholding tax deducted, and US dividends 15% if you submit a W-8BEN form to your broker. See the next section for more details.

Remember that investing in the stock market carries real risks. Share prices can fluctuate significantly, and there is no guarantee of returns. If you’re new to investing, consider consulting a qualified financial adviser, starting with smaller amounts to learn how the market works, and prioritising broadly diversified, low-cost index ETFs over individual stock picking unless you have a strong rationale and risk tolerance for concentrated positions.

How investing is taxed in Ireland

The broker you choose does not change how your gains are taxed, but the type of investment does. None of the brokers in this list deducts Irish tax for you, so you need to declare gains and income through your annual tax return. The table below summarises the main rules in 2026 according to Revenue. USC stands for Universal Social Charge, PRSI for Pay Related Social Insurance and DIRT for Deposit Interest Retention Tax.

Investment Tax on gains Other rules
Individual stocks CGT at 33% €1,270 annual exemption. Losses can be offset against other gains
EU-domiciled ETFs and funds Exit tax at 38% (41% until 31 December 2025) Deemed disposal every 8 years. No annual exemption and no loss relief against other gains
Dividends from stocks Income tax at your marginal rate, plus USC and PRSI Declared on your annual tax return
Deposit interest DIRT at 33% Usually deducted at source by Irish banks

Main tax rules for Irish retail investors in 2026. Budget 2027, due on 6 October 2026, may change some of these rates.

The new Savings and Investment Account

In August 2026, the government published a roadmap for the taxation of retail investment. Its centrepiece is a Savings and Investment Account (SIA) expected in 2027, open to Irish tax residents aged 18 or over, with one account per person. Investments held inside it will pay a flat tax rate with a tax-free threshold, and deemed disposal will not apply. The tax rate, the threshold and the annual contribution limit will be set in Budget 2027. Derivatives and crypto will not be allowed, and deemed disposal remains in place for ETFs held outside the account.

Investor protection by broker

Investor compensation only applies if a broker fails and your assets are missing. It does not protect you against market losses. Interactive Brokers is the only broker in this list that serves Irish clients through a CBI-authorised entity, covered by the Investor Compensation Company DAC (ICCL). The others serve Ireland from other EU countries and rely on the scheme of their home country.

Broker Entity serving Irish clients Regulator Investor compensation
Interactive Brokers Interactive Brokers Ireland Ltd Central Bank of Ireland ICCL, 90% of the loss up to €20,000
eToro eToro (Europe) Ltd CySEC (Cyprus) Cyprus ICF, up to €20,000

Which platform should you choose?

When choosing an online broker, look at the fees it charges, whether it is regulated by a top-tier authority such as the Central Bank of Ireland, the investor protection that applies and the range of products you can trade (not all platforms offer EU stocks, for example).

Our top picks are:

  1. Interactive Brokers: Best overall and for the lowest FX fees
  2. eToro: Best for beginners and social trading
  3. Plus500: Ideal for demo accounts
  4. DEGIRO: Best for long-term investors
  5. Saxo: Best for experienced investors
  6. Trading 212: Best for ETFs with no commission (other fees may apply)
  7. Lightyear: Best emerging low-cost broker

The best online broker in your specific case will depend on your profile, preference, and objectives. Compare the options above and choose the one that fits you best.

A reminder that the above should not be seen as investment advice and should be considered information only. Investors should do their own research and diligence about the best-suited services and opportunities for their risk, returns, and impact strategy.

Final thoughts

The best stockbroker in Ireland depends on what you need. Interactive Brokers is the most complete option and the only one in this list with a CBI-authorised Irish entity, eToro is the easiest place to start and copy other investors, and DEGIRO keeps costs low for long-term ETF investors. Trading 212 and Lightyear are simple, low-cost apps for regular investing, while Saxo suits experienced investors who want a broad product range.

Whichever you choose, remember that Irish tax rules matter as much as broker fees: exit tax and deemed disposal on EU ETFs can weigh more on your returns than the cost of each trade. Keep an eye on Budget 2027 and the new Savings and Investment Account, which could change the best way to invest from 2027.

FAQs about stock brokers in Ireland

What is a brokerage company?

A broker is a regulated company that acts as the intermediary between you and the market, executing your orders to buy or sell stocks, ETFs, crypto and other assets, and holding them on your behalf.

Which broker is best in Ireland?

There is no single answer. It depends on what you value most: fees, security, investment platform or any relevant feature.

What are the types of investments you can make with a brokerage account?

Depending on the broker, you can invest in stocks, ETFs, bonds, funds and crypto, and trade derivatives such as options, futures and CFDs on stocks, indices, commodities, forex and cryptocurrencies.

How to avoid paying capital gains tax on shares in Ireland?

You cannot avoid it entirely, but you can reduce it legally. The first €1,270 of gains each year is exempt, losses on shares can be offset against gains, and pension products such as a PRSA (Personal Retirement Savings Account) let investments grow free of CGT. From 2027, the planned Savings and Investment Account should add another tax-efficient option. Consult a tax adviser for advice on your situation.

Is there an ISA in Ireland?

Not yet. The government plans to launch a Savings and Investment Account (SIA) in 2027, with a flat tax rate, a tax-free threshold and no deemed disposal on investments held inside it. The rate, threshold and annual limit are due in Budget 2027.

Do brokers deduct Irish tax for me?

Generally no. The brokers in this list do not withhold Irish CGT or exit tax, so you need to calculate your gains and declare them on your annual tax return. Foreign dividends may have withholding tax deducted in the source country, which you can usually credit against Irish tax under a double taxation treaty.

Which brokers are regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland?

In this list, only Interactive Brokers serves Irish clients through an entity authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland (Interactive Brokers Ireland Ltd), covered by the ICCL. The other brokers serve Ireland from other EU countries and are covered by their home schemes.
