Finding the right broker in Romania can seem daunting, particularly if you are just getting started.

In this post we look in detail at the best online brokers available to Romanian investors. Whether you are new to investing and want a straightforward platform, or exploring ETFs, cryptocurrencies, or CFDs, there is a suitable option.

Two points worth establishing upfront. These brokers are licensed in other EU countries and passport their services into Romania under MiFID II (the EU Markets in Financial Instruments Directive), so they appear in the register of the ASF (Autoritatea de Supraveghere Financiară), Romania’s financial regulator. Investor compensation is typically capped at €20,000, depending on the entity. And none of them withholds Romanian tax at source, so declaring your investment income to ANAF (the National Agency for Fiscal Administration) falls to you. We explain how in the tax section below.

Best brokers in Romania: top 7 list

  1. Interactive Brokers: Best EU broker overall
  2. eToro: Best broker for commission-free investing and social trading
  3. XTB: Best broker for low Forex spreads and RON accounts
  4. Freedom24: Best for ETF Investment plans and personal manager support
  5. Plus500: Best broker for CFDs
81% of retail CFD accounts lose money.
  6. Saxo Markets: Best broker for professionals
  7. Trading 212: Best broker for beginners and Pies & AutoInvest

Interactive Brokers leads the list as the best online broker in Romania.

Founded in 1978, Interactive Brokers is one of the largest international brokers listed on the NASDAQ exchange (Ticker: IBKR). It is regulated by many international top-tier regulators and has 5.58 million client accounts (September 2026), with no minimum deposit requirement. Romanian clients are served by Interactive Brokers Ireland Ltd, regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland, and covered by the Irish investor compensation scheme (90% of the loss, up to €20,000).

It caters to both beginners and professional investors looking for any type of financial products (bonds, ETFs, shares, you name it!), an easy-to-use platform, advanced technical and fundamental trading tools, and a great educational component.

Interactive Brokers supports various account base currencies, including GBP, USD, EUR, and other major currencies. However, funding these accounts is limited to bank transfers. They offer one of the tightest spreads in the market, ensuring favourable trading conditions, but their commission is tier-based, meaning it varies depending on your monthly trading volume.

With the tiered plan, US stocks cost $0.0035 per share ($0.35 minimum), while European stocks and ETFs cost 0.05% of the order value (€1.25 minimum, €29 maximum). Since August 2026, IBKR also gives access to the Bucharest Stock Exchange, with a fixed commission of 0.28% (minimum 10 RON).

IBKR GlobalTrader is another mobile trading app offered by Interactive Brokers that allows traders to engage in simple and worldwide trading. The app offers the flexibility to trade in fractions and invest with as little as $1, making trading accessible to traders of all levels. You can also open a simulated trading account to practice trading before opening a live account and gain access to $10,000 in simulated cash to trade in a simulated trading environment.

On the downside, you might be overwhelmed by the number of buttons and features available on each platform, especially if you are new to investing. However, Interactive Brokers offers a lot of educational materials and video tutorials to assist you in navigating and utilizing their platforms effectively. These resources can be beneficial regardless of the specific platform you are trading or using.

52% of retail CFD accounts lose money.

Another strong platform available in Romania is eToro, an international broker with over 40 million registered users and 4.28 million funded accounts (June 2026), best known for social trading through CopyTrader.

The platform offers more than 5,000 assets, including real stocks and ETFs. On pricing, ETFs trade commission-free, while stocks carry a $1 commission on most exchanges ($2 on the Australian, Hong Kong, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Tokyo exchanges), applied on both opening and closing.

Opening an account is straightforward, with a $100,000 demo account available. The main drawback for Romanian investors is currency conversion: there is no RON account, so lei deposited into the main USD account are converted with a 1% fee. EU residents can also use a EUR account. Withdrawals cost $5 from the USD account and are free from local currency accounts, and eToro’s fee page currently lists no inactivity fee.

Romanian clients are served by eToro (Europe) Ltd under CySEC supervision with ASF oversight, covered up to €20,000 plus Lloyd’s insurance. eToro has been NASDAQ-listed (ETOR) since May 2025.

How to choose the best broker in Romania?

Choosing the best broker in Romania is important for a good trading experience. Here are simple steps to help you make the right choice:

  • Check regulation: look for brokers regulated by trusted EU authorities and listed in the ASF register, to ensure they follow the rules and protect your money.
  • Check availability: not every European broker accepts Romanian residents. DEGIRO, for example, doesn’t.
  • Fees and commissions: compare fees and commissions. Lower costs mean more money stays in your pocket.
  • Trading platforms: check if the broker offers user-friendly platforms that suit your needs. A good platform is crucial for smooth trading.
  • Financial instruments: make sure the broker provides a variety of financial instruments, so you can trade what you’re interested in.
  • Customer support: test customer support. A responsive and helpful team is important if you have questions or issues.
  • Reputation: research reviews and ratings from other users to get an idea of the broker’s reputation. A good reputation indicates trustworthiness.

By considering these factors, you can pick the best broker in Romania for your trading goals.

How investment income is taxed in Romania in 2026

The fiscal packages approved in 2025 raised the tax on investment income from 2026. Because the brokers in this list are foreign, they don’t withhold Romanian tax, so you calculate and pay it yourself.

Income Foreign broker Romanian broker
Capital gains 16% of the net annual gain (you declare it) 3% (held 365 days or more) or 6% (less than 365 days), withheld
Dividends 16% (foreign tax withheld can be credited) 16%, withheld
Crypto gains 16% of the net gain N/A

Tax rates for individuals in 2026, after Law 239/2025 and Law 141/2025.

A few practical points:

  • Declaration: income earned through foreign brokers is declared in the Declarația unică (form 212), due by 25 May of the following year.
  • Losses: with a foreign broker, gains and losses of the same year are netted, so you only pay tax on the net gain.
  • Foreign dividend tax: if a dividend was already taxed abroad (for example 15% on US dividends with a W-8BEN form), you can usually credit that tax and pay only the difference in Romania.
  • Health contribution (CASS): if your total investment and other non-salary income exceeds 6 gross minimum salaries a year, you also pay 10% CASS on a fixed base of 6, 12 or 24 minimum salaries.

This is general information, not tax advice. Check the latest rules with ANAF or a tax adviser before filing.
