Investing in international markets is more accessible from Ghana than ever, though the choice of platforms can make the decision harder rather than easier.

We have analysed and reviewed the leading options to help you identify the most reliable and usable apps available to Ghanaian investors.

One point worth establishing first: none of the platforms covered here is licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Ghana, and none offers access to the Ghana Stock Exchange. You would be contracting with an overseas entity to invest in international markets, which means your protection comes from that entity’s home regulator rather than Ghanaian authorities. Cedi-to-dollar conversion also applies on every deposit and withdrawal, and that cost typically matters more than trading commissions.

Interactive Brokers is among the most reliable brokers available. Founded in 1978 and listed on NASDAQ (ticker: IBKR, an S&P 500 constituent since 2024), it has weathered multiple financial crises and now serves over 5 million client accounts, supervised by top-tier regulators including the SEC, FINRA, and FCA.

IBKR offers sophisticated tools alongside an extensive product range covering real stocks and ETFs, options, futures, bonds, and forex instruments across 170+ markets in 36+ countries. The platform lineup is tiered by experience: IBKR GlobalTrader is the accessible mobile option, with fractional shares from $1 and a $10,000 virtual demo account.

For more capability, IBKR Mobile covers the fuller product range, while Trader Workstation on desktop offers the complete professional toolset. Both can feel overwhelming initially, which is why we would point newer investors to GlobalTrader first.

Two things make IBKR particularly well suited to Ghanaian investors. It offers real asset ownership rather than CFDs, which matters if you are building a long-term portfolio. And currency conversion costs roughly 0.20 basis points (minimum $2), substantially cheaper than most alternatives – relevant given that converting cedi to dollars is unavoidable when investing internationally. There is also no minimum deposit.

Ghanaian clients are typically served by IBKR’s overseas entities under SEC and FINRA supervision, with SIPC protection up to $500,000 (including a $250,000 cash sub-limit), covering broker failure rather than investment losses.

69-80% of retail CFD accounts lose money.

XTB is a Polish company founded in 2002 and listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, serving over 1.7 million clients globally. It holds licences across multiple jurisdictions including the FCA, KNF, CySEC, and BaFin.

An important point for Ghanaian residents: you would be onboarded by XTB International Limited, regulated by the Financial Services Commission in Belize (Licence No. 000302/316) rather than by any of XTB’s European entities. That distinction matters considerably – the Belize entity does not carry the investor compensation coverage that applies under FCA or CySEC regulation, so if the firm failed there would be no scheme to compensate you.

The award-winning xStation platform, available on mobile and desktop, offers a wide instrument range, strong technical analysis tools, comprehensive educational content, and negative balance protection.

A second important limitation: from Ghana you can only buy CFDs on stocks, not the shares themselves. You would gain price exposure through a derivative with no ownership, no shareholder rights, and overnight financing costs on positions held beyond the trading day. CFDs are complex, leveraged instruments and most retail investors lose money trading them.

Within those constraints, XTB offers a capable platform with no commission on stock CFDs, no minimum deposit, strong educational resources, and a free demo account – a reasonable option for active traders who understand the risks, though not for long-term investing.

Methodology

Our aim is to help Ghanaian investors make an informed choice. Each platform has different strengths, and we have tried to reflect a range of investor profiles. Here is what we assessed:

  • Real assets or CFDs: the most consequential distinction on this list. Owning shares outright is fundamentally different from holding a leveraged derivative position, and only some of these platforms offer real ownership to Ghanaian clients;
  • Which entity serves you: several brokers onboard Ghanaian residents through offshore entities with materially weaker protection than their European or US ones. Verify which entity holds your account before depositing;
  • Total cost: commissions, spreads, and especially currency conversion, which recurs on every deposit and withdrawal and often exceeds trading costs for a cedi-based investor;
  • Funding methods: check which deposit and withdrawal options are available from Ghana, expected timelines, and total conversion costs;
  • Educational resources: particularly valuable for newer investors building knowledge before committing capital;
  • Platform quality and customer service: functionality, usability, and responsiveness when problems arise.

Other FAQs

What is the difference between a stock and stock CFD?

While the stock gives you a property right over a share of the company, the CFD does not. The stock CFD is a derivative contract where the underlying asset is the stock and where the broker promises to pay you back the difference in value between the time you opened the position and the time you close it. CFDs have a leverage effect: if you buy a stock CFD and its price goes down, you will need to borrow money from the broker to keep the position open. This makes the instrument a risky option that is not suitable for beginners.
