FAQs
What is Trade Republic?
Founded in 2015, Trade Republic is a German investment app and bank that lets you invest in stocks, ETFs, bonds, derivatives and crypto, with savings plans from €1. It has more than 10 million customers in 18 European countries and over €150 billion in assets. Trade Republic is a fully licensed bank supervised by BaFin and the Bundesbank. Cash is protected up to €100,000 by the German deposit guarantee scheme, and your securities are held on your behalf, separately from Trade Republic’s own assets.
How does Trade Republic make money?
As economists like to say, “there is no such thing as a free lunch”. For years, Trade Republic earned part of its income through payment for order flow (PFOF): payments from the trading venues it sent its clients’ orders to, which creates a potential conflict of interest. The EU ban on PFOF has applied since June 30, 2026, so Trade Republic now relies on other income sources, namely:
- Interest: as a bank, Trade Republic earns interest on the cash its clients hold, and passes part of it on to them;
- Securities lending: brokers can lend clients’ securities to third parties in exchange for a fee. Borrowers use them for hedging, arbitrage or short selling, for example;
- Fees: the €1 external fee on one-off orders, card fees and fees on other services;
- Other services: such as its card, private markets and wealth products.
