Hello, fellow investor! We will review the IMPACT app, a product created by Interactive Brokers, an online broker founded in 1978 and listed on the NASDAQ (ticker: IBKR).

We recommend the IMPACT app if you want to take a sustainable investing approach to your portfolio by using environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors with low commissions.

IBKR IMPACT is an app that helps you invest in companies that share your values. Do you care about gender equality or clean air? The app helps you find companies that match those values, build a portfolio around them and avoid business practices you would rather not support.

This review uses screenshots from the demo account for the writer’s privacy (our writers have real accounts with the platforms they review). The experience with real money is the same as in the demo account.

Want to know more about the IBKR IMPACT app? Let’s get into it!

Overview

The IMPACT app was designed to let you invest in companies that are aligned with the values you care most about. It groups these values into 13 categories that cover most environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues:

  • Ocean Life.
  • Land Health.
  • Consumer Safety.
  • Sustainable Product Lifecycle.
  • Clean Air.
  • Ethical Leadership.
  • Gender Equality.
  • Mindful Business Models.
  • LGBTQ Inclusion.
  • Pure Water.
  • Company Transparency.
  • Racial Equality.
  • Fair Labor and Thriving Communities.
IMPACT mobile app

It also lets you flag business practices you want to avoid, so the app can highlight companies involved in them. When the app launched in 2021, the list covered animal testing, business ethics controversies, corporate political spending and lobbying, energy-intensive businesses, fossil fuels, greenhouse emissions, hazardous waste, high water usage, tobacco, alcohol and gambling, and weapons and gun manufacturing.

Once you have set your values and exclusions, you can build a portfolio that reflects them.

Overall, the IMPACT app has a similar layout and features to other Interactive Brokers apps, such as IBKR GlobalTrader. The difference is its focus on ESG data to analyse your portfolio. Keep in mind that this ESG data comes from third-party providers and IBKR’s own algorithms, and ESG ratings can differ between providers.

Investment platform

The IMPACT app is easy to navigate, especially if you already use Interactive Brokers, since most features work like those in IBKR Mobile and IBKR GlobalTrader.

When you log in, the app opens on the last page you used. The first time, it opens on the “Home” tab, where you can see your portfolio value, return and Impact Lens at a glance:

IMPACT app dashboard

From there, you can explore the four tabs at the bottom of the screen. The “Portfolio” tab has two sub-tabs: “Performance”, which shows each position and its change since you bought it, and “Impact Lens”, which shows the IMPACT score of each position.

As with any broker, there is also a “Watchlist” where you can follow the companies you are keeping an eye on:

You also have the usual Profile page (icon in the top left corner), with your account details, transaction history, customer support, settings and log out.

Products and markets

The IMPACT app offers stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, options, cryptocurrencies and carbon offsets. Bonds, futures and forex are only available on IBKR’s other platforms (TWS, IBKR Mobile and Client Portal), using the same account.

Crypto availability depends on where you live. In the IMPACT app, crypto is offered to eligible US clients through Paxos Trust Company. Since 31 March 2026, Interactive Brokers Ireland has also offered 11 crypto-assets (including Bitcoin and Ethereum) to investors in the European Economic Area, through zerohash. However, IBKR lists TWS, IBKR Desktop, Client Portal, IBKR Mobile and IBKR GlobalTrader for this service, not the IMPACT app. You can read more in our guide to crypto on Interactive Brokers.

Stocks

In the Stocks menu, you can quickly filter by category (“Top movers”, “Top IMPACT”, “Top ESG” and more). Scrolling down, you can also filter by market cap, region or industry:

ETFs

The ETF offering is organised by theme so you can quickly filter by your preferences. Here, the focus is not only on sustainable investing but on broader themes such as growth, value and equity income:

Fractional shares

For eligible stocks and ETFs, you can buy fractional shares from as little as $1, whatever the share price, which makes it easier to build a diversified portfolio with small amounts.

Carbon offsets

Carbon offsets are a special feature of the app. They let you offset your own carbon footprint by buying and retiring carbon credits. You can pick carbon-generating activities from a list (such as your electricity or natural gas usage) or enter the amount of carbon you want to offset. The feature launched for US clients in March 2022 and was extended in May 2022 to clients of Interactive Brokers Ireland, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore:

Finally, the app has a Swap button, a quick way to close a position in a company that does not match your values and open one in a company that does, in a single order. You can use it on any position. In the example below, we swapped Shell shares (an oil company) for Greenvolt shares (a renewable energy company):

Fees

As with crypto, fees depend on where you live. US customers can choose between IBKR Lite and IBKR Pro, while non-US customers only have access to IBKR Pro. This means that only US customers, through IBKR Lite, get commission-free US stocks and ETFs. The main fees are:

Pricing IBKR Lite (US only) IBKR Pro
US stocks and ETFs Commission-free Up to $0.0035 per share, min. $0.35 (tiered), or $0.005 per share, min. $1 (fixed)

Cryptocurrencies 0.12% to 0.18% of trade value (min. $1.75, max. 1%) 0.12% to 0.18% of trade value (min. $1.75, max. 1%), eligible regions

For the full and current fee schedule, including carbon offsets and fees on non-US markets, check Interactive Brokers’ pricing page.

Safety and regulation

The IBKR IMPACT app is part of Interactive Brokers, so you get exactly the same protection as any other IBKR client.

Interactive Brokers is regulated by several top-tier financial authorities, such as the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). This does not mean a broker cannot fail, but it is the first important layer of protection.

Interactive Brokers must also take part in the investor protection scheme of each country where it operates. Your protection depends on which entity holds your account. For example:

  • Interactive Brokers LLC: US clients are protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) up to $500,000, including up to $250,000 in cash, plus excess insurance from Lloyd’s of London.
  • Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited: IBKR says its products are covered by the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) only in limited circumstances, and assets held at Interactive Brokers LLC benefit from SIPC cover.
  • Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited: EEA clients are regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland and covered by the Investor Compensation Company (ICCL) for 90% of losses, up to €20,000. Crypto is not covered by this scheme.

Interactive Brokers is also a listed company, which means it must publish its financial statements regularly. You can find more details in our Interactive Brokers review.

Account opening

If you already have an Interactive Brokers account, you do not need to open a new one for the IMPACT app. You can log in with your usual Interactive Brokers details.

The app is available on the App Store as “IMPACT by Interactive Brokers”. If you do not have an account, you will be redirected to sign up with Interactive Brokers. You can start your registration here. You can also try the app first with a simulated trading (demo) account.

Supported countries

The IMPACT app is available in every country where Interactive Brokers accepts clients. Anyone with an Interactive Brokers account can log in to IMPACT, just as they would to Interactive Brokers’ other platforms: Trader Workstation (TWS), IBKR Desktop, Client Portal, IBKR Mobile or IBKR GlobalTrader. Some features depend on your country and the IBKR entity that holds your account: crypto in the app and donations through IBKR GIVE are for US clients, and carbon offsets are limited to certain entities.

Bottom line

IBKR’s IMPACT app is a mobile app dedicated to ESG investing, built by Interactive Brokers. It combines Interactive Brokers’ low costs and global market access with tools to check how well your portfolio matches your values, flag practices you want to avoid and swap positions in a single tap.

It is a good fit if sustainable investing matters to you and you want a simpler app than IBKR’s main platforms. Keep in mind that ESG scores depend on third-party data and methodologies, so it is worth checking what is behind a company’s score before relying on it.

As far as we know, Interactive Brokers is still one of the very few brokers to offer a separate app dedicated entirely to ESG investing.
