BlackRock is the world’s largest investment manager, with $13.9 trillion in total assets under management (as of Q1 2026). To put that into perspective, only two countries on the planet have a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) higher than that. The company has disclosed 5,530 total holdings and is a major investor in virtually every industry imaginable.
In this article, we will look deeper into BlackRock’s current and historical assets under management.
Brief history
BlackRock was founded in 1988 as Blackstone Financial Management, a unit of The Blackstone Group, by eight partners who set out to provide client-oriented asset management. By 1989, in just under a year, the company was already managing a staggering $2.7 billion in AUM, and by 1991 that had grown to $9 billion. In 1992, the firm became independent and adopted the name BlackRock. In 1999, BlackRock held its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange, by which time its assets under management were already over $165 billion.
In 2009, BlackRock acquired Barclays Global Investors (BGI) and became the world’s largest asset manager. That deal also brought iShares, the ETF business BGI had launched back in 2000, which has since become the world’s largest ETF provider, with over 1,250 products and more than $4 trillion in assets.
In 2021, BlackRock became the first asset manager to reach the $10 trillion AUM mark. After a dip in 2022, its assets have continued to climb, surpassing $13 trillion by 2026.
