BlackRock is the world’s largest investment manager, with $15.3 trillion in total assets under management as of 30 June 2026, after $868 billion of net inflows over the preceding twelve months. To put that into perspective, only two countries on the planet have a Gross Domestic Product higher than that: the United States at around $32 trillion and China at around $21 trillion. Germany, third on the list, is at roughly $5.5 trillion. BlackRock disclosed 5,696 holdings in its second-quarter 2026 regulatory filing and is a major investor in virtually every industry imaginable.

In this article, we will look deeper into BlackRock’s current and historical assets under management.

Brief history

BlackRock was founded in 1988 as Blackstone Financial Management, a unit of The Blackstone Group, by eight partners who set out to provide client-oriented asset management. By 1989, in just under a year, the company was already managing $2.7 billion. The firm adopted the name BlackRock in 1992, separated from Blackstone in 1994 and was acquired by PNC in February 1995, a sequence often compressed into a single step. In 1999, BlackRock held its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange, by which time its assets under management were about $165 billion.

In December 2009, BlackRock acquired Barclays Global Investors (BGI) for around $13.5 billion in cash and shares, and became the world’s largest asset manager. That deal also brought iShares, the ETF business BGI had launched in 2000, which has since become the world’s largest ETF provider. iShares publishes around 1,700 ETFs globally (31 March 2026) and its assets crossed $6 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, roughly doubling in three years, reaching $6.25 trillion at 30 June 2026.

At the end of 2021, BlackRock’s assets passed $10 trillion, a level no asset manager had reached before. After a dip in 2022, they have climbed steadily, reaching $15.3 trillion by mid-2026.

A large part of that recent growth came from buying rather than building, and the shift is strategic: BlackRock has been moving into private markets and data, where fees are higher than on index products. It completed four acquisitions in under two years:

  • Global Infrastructure Partners, completed 1 October 2024, bringing roughly $170 billion in infrastructure assets.
  • Preqin, the private-markets data provider, completed in March 2025 for £2.5 billion in cash, about $3.2 billion.
  • HPS Investment Partners, completed 1 July 2025, a private credit manager with around $157 billion in assets, paid for substantially in BlackRock equity.
  • ElmTree Funds, completed 2 September 2025, a net-lease real estate manager with about $3 billion.

Conclusion

BlackRock-managed investments have a strong, often leading, presence in almost all industries. Its largest equity positions are concentrated in technology. On its second-quarter 2026 regulatory filing, covering 5,696 holdings worth $6.73 trillion at 30 June 2026, the ten largest by weight were Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Broadcom, Meta, Micron and AMD, with Nvidia rather than Apple now in first place.

One thing worth being clear about, because it is routinely misread: these positions are held inside BlackRock’s index funds and ETFs on behalf of its clients, not with BlackRock’s own money. The voting rights attached to them are what make the scale politically contested, not ownership in the ordinary sense. If you want more detail on the holdings, you can find it here.

BlackRock is listed on the NYSE under BLK. On holdings reported as of 30 June 2026, its largest shareholders are Vanguard at around 9%, BlackRock’s own fund entities at around 6.5%, State Street at around 4% and Temasek at around 3.4%. Two of the largest are therefore BlackRock’s own biggest competitors, which is a neat illustration of how index investing works in practice.
