DEGIRO has a dedicated UK website, but as of October 2026 it is not accepting new UK clients. Below, we explain the current situation and the alternatives available to UK investors.

Is DEGIRO available in the UK?

Not for new clients at the moment. DEGIRO’s UK website states that “on-boarding for new UK clients is temporarily unavailable”. Existing UK clients can keep using their accounts.

UK clients are served by flatexDEGIRO Bank SE, a German bank that is not authorised by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). As DEGIRO’s UK website explains, this means investors are not protected by the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). DEGIRO’s UK marketing is approved by WealthKernel Limited, an FCA-authorised firm.

DEGIRO has paused and reopened UK onboarding before, so check its UK website if you want to know whether it has reopened.

Is DEGIRO a good UK broker?

DEGIRO is one of Europe’s leading brokers by assets.

It’s an execution-only broker that doesn’t offer contracts for difference (CFDs), with more than 3 million clients across Europe. For existing UK clients, UK shares cost £1.75 plus a £1 handling fee, US shares €1 plus €1, and ETFs from the Core Selection €1 (fair use policy applies), with a 0.25% currency conversion fee.

Still, it has downsides you should be aware of:

  • No interest on uninvested cash: DEGIRO pays no interest on the cash in your account, while some competitors pay around 4% on GBP. In fact, this is one of DEGIRO’s main sources of revenue.
  • No FSCS protection: UK clients are not covered by the FSCS, since flatexDEGIRO Bank SE is not FCA-authorised.
  • No ISA: DEGIRO doesn’t offer a Stocks and Shares ISA or a Cash ISA, so you can’t shelter your gains and dividends from tax. Several UK alternatives do.
  • Connectivity fee: DEGIRO charges up to €2.50 a year per exchange you’re invested on outside the London Stock Exchange.
  • No fractional shares: you can only buy whole shares, which makes it harder to invest small amounts regularly.

DEGIRO is still a low-cost option for long-term investors in Europe, but for UK investors the lack of an ISA is a real cost: a Stocks and Shares ISA shelters up to £20,000 a year from capital gains and dividend tax.

52% of retail CFD accounts lose money.

Founded in 2007 and listed on Nasdaq since May 2025, eToro is a well-known fintech and the leader in social trading (following and copying other investors), with more than 4 million funded accounts. It offers commission-free ETF investing in the UK, while stocks cost $1 or $2 per trade when you open and close a position, depending on the exchange. It also offers a Stocks and Shares ISA for UK residents.

You can also invest in cryptocurrencies and trade CFDs on commodities, forex and indices through a platform that is intuitive and simple to use, which makes it a good choice for beginners.

Opening an account and depositing is easy, and you can try the platform with a demo account (virtual money). On the downside, spreads can be high on some products. UK clients can hold a GBP account, which avoids conversion fees on deposits and withdrawals, but a fee applies when you buy assets in other currencies.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. 52% of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs with this provider. Founded in 1978, listed on NASDAQ (ticker: IBKR) and part of the S&P 500 since August 2025, Interactive Brokers is a global online broker that has come through major financial crises, showing resilience and rigorous risk management. UK clients are served by Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited, regulated by the FCA.

Interactive Brokers offers an advanced platform with a wide range of products (stocks, options, mutual funds, ETFs, futures, bonds and currencies) on 170 markets in 40 countries, solid order execution (IB SmartRouting) and a full set of technical and fundamental tools. UK residents can also open a Stocks and Shares ISA.

Beginners and intermediate investors have educational tools to explore, but the learning curve is steep. That’s why we mainly recommend it to more experienced investors. Customer service gives clear answers, so there’s little need to go back and forth.

On the downside, Interactive Brokers’ fee structure is complex and the registration process is lengthy (although fully online). However, its low currency conversion fees, tight spreads and stock lending programme can still make it cheaper than most brokers.

If you’re a beginner, IBKR GlobalTrader is a simpler mobile app to trade stocks, options and ETFs, ideal for beginner investors, with automatic currency conversion and fractional shares.

69-80% of retail CFD accounts lose money.

XTB is a global investment firm founded in 2004, with more than 2.9 million clients, listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and regulated in the UK by the FCA, offering stocks, ETFs and CFDs on forex, indices, commodities and cryptocurrencies.

For UK investors, XTB offers both a flexible Stocks and Shares ISA and a flexible Cash ISA, with free account opening and no maintenance fees. Inside the Stocks and Shares ISA, you can build a portfolio from thousands of stocks and hundreds of ETFs, with 0% commission on stocks and ETFs up to €100,000 of monthly volume (0.2% above that, minimum £10). A 0.5% currency conversion fee applies when you buy assets in another currency.

XTB also pays interest on uninvested GBP, calculated daily and paid monthly, at a variable rate of up to 4.00% AER, as shown on XTB’s UK website in October 2026 (USD earns 3.45% and EUR 2.30%). The Cash ISA pays a variable 4% AER, its standard rate rather than a time-limited promotion, with no withdrawal limits and no minimum balance. Being flexible, it lets you withdraw and replace money within the same tax year without using up your ISA allowance. XTB holds Cash ISA money in segregated accounts at UK banks, with FSCS protection up to £120,000. It also offers investment plans for recurring ETF investing.

Investing involves risk of loss.

Founded in 2017 in the US and launched in the UK in July 2023, Webull brings low commissions to the British market. New users get a signup promotion.

As a UK user, you get a demo account where you can buy and sell as you would with real money.

You can only deposit in pounds, so when you invest in US stocks (traded in dollars) you pay a 0.35% currency conversion fee. Each trade also costs 0.025%, so you pay roughly 0.375% per transaction, plus small regulatory fees.

Fractional shares are useful here, since many US stocks trade at high prices per share. Webull UK has expanded its range since launch, adding ETFs and a Stocks and Shares ISA, so check its current offer if you want a tax-efficient account.

Webull UK is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), so your money (assets and cash) is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £85,000.

When investing your capital is at risk.

InvestEngine is a UK investment platform and robo-advisor. It gives you access to low-cost, diversified ETF portfolios built around your goals and risk tolerance, with both managed portfolios and a DIY option for investors who prefer to build their own. It also offers a Stocks and Shares ISA.

Pros:

  1. Low costs: no commission on ETF trades in the DIY option, and a competitive fee on managed portfolios.
  2. Diversification: a wide range of ETFs, so you can build a portfolio that matches your risk tolerance.
  3. Automatic rebalancing on managed portfolios, to keep your target allocation.
  4. Easy to use, with helpful tools such as risk questionnaires and educational content.

Cons:

  1. ETFs only: you can’t buy individual stocks, bonds or other instruments.
  2. Smaller selection than a full broker, which may feel limiting if you want a very specific fund.

All in all, it’s a great solution for buy-and-hold investors who only want ETFs for the long term.

Which platform should you choose?

Whether you choose DEGIRO, eToro, Interactive Brokers, XTB, Webull, InvestEngine or another platform, take the time to compare them before opening an account.

Compare costs, products and educational resources before you decide. For UK investors, one question matters more than most: do you want a Stocks and Shares ISA? If so, DEGIRO isn’t an option, since it doesn’t offer one, and it is not accepting new UK clients anyway.

The best broker for you depends on your profile, preferences and goals.

The above should not be construed as investment advice and is for information only. Investors should do their own research and due diligence to determine which services best suit their risk, return and goals.
